Sarah Bay Awarded First Daniel Mauser Memorial Scholarship at CU
In 1999 we established a Memorial Scholship Fund at the University of Colorado in Daniel's name. Contributions came from friends, Tom's co-workers and colleagues at the Colorado Dept. of Transportation, and people who read about it on this web site. The Fund, which has raised over $10,000, is intended for an exceptional Columbine High graduate, preferably someone who has taken debate.
We're happy to announce that the first student awarded a $2,000 scholarship was Class of 2000 graduate Sarah Bay. This scholarship is especially touching to us because she knew Daniel well and was on the debate team with him.
They both competed in Lincoln-Douglas style debate. Sarah had LD one more year than Daniel, so she thinks Daniel saw her somewhat as a mentor. "Because of his eagerness to learn and his kindness, Dan was a well respected and well liked member of the team," Sarah says. She also speaks affectionately of how Daniel was given the nickname of "Moose" by she and others on the debate team.
Right now Sarah is an open option major, but she plans on majoring in Broadcast Journalism. She says she understands the need for ethics in a journalism career and thinks she can bring a vastly different perspective to the media community.
We wish the best of luck to Sarah and are so glad that she feels the scholarship means so much to her!
